Gwen had just finish setting up for the next lesson when her students began filing in. After everyone had taken their seats, she began.
"Hello everyone, today is our first practical lesson. We will be working on the spell Wingardium Leviosa. This is the levitating spell. You use this spell on an object and the object rises into the air.
Pronunciation is the key to this spell. In wingardium, make sure to make the "a" sound very long; like (wing-gaaaar-dium). In leviosa, be sure to put an accent on the "o"; like (levio'sa). Correct pronunciation is essential to making this spell work.
The next thing you need to know is the correct wand movement. You begin by pointing your wand away from you and then make a "u"shape in the air going from left to right. The, after you make the "u" shape, you slightly flick your wand. So, just remember to swish and flick."
Gwen then demonstrated the spell for the class by pointing her wand at her desk, and making it levitate about two feet off the ground.
"Okay, in front of everybody is a feather,a solid wooden box, and a glass filled with water. You have to levitate all three; and the glass without spilling the water. I will walk around the room and grade you on how you do. Begin."

Dastan came in, still feeling exhausted from his recent adventures in the Forbidden Forest and subsequent runespoor poisoning and recovery in the hospital wing but feeling much better now. So far, he’d only had a few dizzy spells, and his aches had returned a bit, but nothing unbearable.
He shot a glance at Astin, who sat not too far away. He thought about going over and sitting next to him, but decided against it. He didn’t want everyone thinking that he was all human, which is exactly how he acted when he spent too much time with the blond.
Forcing himself to return his attention to class, Dastan was pleased to discover that they were having a practical lesson. What was more, it was the exact lesson that he had recommended during his previous quiz. Smirking a little and looking at the teacher, he wondered if she knew how smug he felt in that moment.
Then, the lesson was laid out and Dastan was ready to work. He had done Wingardium Leviosa about a million times before and found it rather easy. In fact, it was one of the easiest spells he’d ever performed. He had mastered it by the time he was 9 under Lord Alex’s tutelage.
“Wingardium Leviosa,” he said, swishing-and-flicking at the feather before him. It rose unsteadily in the air and he smirked. Of course he’d managed to do it on the first try. It was second nature.
Next up was the wooden box. “Wingardium Leviosa,” he said once again, and once again, the thing went up in the air, shaking only a little as Dastan’s concentration suffered due to his recent injuries. Still, a success was a success.
Then, came the truly difficult task: the glass of water. He couldn’t even slosh some of it out of the cup. Taking a deep breath to steady his now slightly erratic heartbeat, he glared at the cup. He would make this work, and he wouldn’t faint. Apparently, magical exertion made recent healings go back a few steps, which was highly irritating. Even so, he had argued with the nurse to let him out. He couldn’t embarrass himself now. He just couldn’t.
“Wingardium Leviosa!” he called with more effort, and the glass of water began flying into the air. A twinge of pain in his wounded arm alerted him to the fact that this wasn’t going to be that easy, but he only stepped up his game, concentrating hard on the glass and making it go even higher. He was succeeding. He was fine. He was…
Another twinge and Dastan’s concentration was torn completely from the cup. It crashed to the ground and broke. Sweating from the effort it had taken and his hands going to the desk for support, Dastan felt defeat inside of him like a burning and painful sensation. He had been doing the spell for years and a simple injury had undone that work in front of everyone. They’d probably all think him weak and pathetic. He’d never have the credibility he’d had before…
But he couldn’t think like that. He muttered some quick motivating sentences and the twinging stopped for a second and he sighed in relief before looking at the mess he had created with the cup. “Reparo!” he called, and the glass immediately repaired itself. Still, it was empty.
“Aguamenti,” Dastan said with only half the effort he usually used so as to make sure not to make it overflow. When it was almost close enough to what had originally been in the glass, Dastan took a step back. If he could do that advanced spell (generally, aguamenti wasn’t taught until 6th or 7th year, but Dastan had learned it this past summer), he could do wingardium leviosa.
“Wingardium Leviosa!” he said, and sure enough, the glass floated back into the air, this time steady and not sloshing. Satisfied, Dastan slowly set it down and smiled to himself, brushing some of his sweaty hair out of his face. He’d done it. He’d proven himself to himself, and that was what was most important.

Oh, great, more magic he couldn't do. Griffin enjoyed the whole non-magical, note taking parts of the class. The wand usage part, not so much. He payed attention this time, he wanted to do a good job for once. He payed particualer attention to the wand movement demonstation and how the pronounce the words. Okay, he had to levitate these three things, it didn't seem so hard. He pointed his wand at the feather and concentrated.
"Wingardium Leviosa." Swish and flick. The feather rose ito the air. Griffin felt so exited that he had accually done it on the first try. Okay, this wasn't so hard, he could do this.
He pointed his wand at the block of wood. "Wingardium Leviosa." Swish and flick. The block wiggled back and forth but didn't float. He tried again and it rose about half a foot then fell back down, close enough.
Now he tried out the glass of water. "Wingardium Leviosa." Swish and flick. The glass rose gracefully off the table about a foot then stopped. Griffin was just about to be pleased with himself, the glass zoomed up and smashed into the ceiling raining on the classroom with water and glass. He crawled uder the table to hide his blushing embarrassment.

(OOC: Let's all pretend that I wrote this around the same time Dastan did, during my second year, just after the Forbidden Forest incident, kk? So that means this is before Astin's made any improvements, btw. He's not regressing, promise. XD)
Astin felt a little hurt that Dastan distanced himself so much from him even after their life-threatening exploit outside, but he didn't let on as much. He just frowned and faced forward, turning his attention to the teacher.
"Okay, in front of everybody is a feather, a solid wooden box, and a glass filled with water. You have to levitate all three; and the glass without spilling the water. I will walk around the room and grade you on how you do. Begin."
Astin looked at the feather. Well. At least he could blow on that if it didn't work, and pretend that it had worked. The others would be harder to fake.
Alrighty. Astin pushed up the sleeves of his robe, preparing for battle... with a feather. Don't laugh. Yes, he can hear you, and he doesn't appreciate it. He breathed out a steadying sigh, shook out his arms, and readied his wand at the feather.
Swish and flick. "Wingardium Leviosa!"
To his surprise, the feather did move. It flipped and twirled in the air, following the path his wand trailed. It continued to float farther away until it apparently got tired of that and fell to rest on some poor girl's head. He looked away quickly and pretended he had nothing to do with it.
Alright, one down; two to go. Although he doubted he'd be able to do much of anything with the other two. He couldn't even control a feather, after all.
Oh well. Here goes nothing.
Swish and flick. "Wingardium Leviosa!" The wooden block scooted off his table and straight into the back of a Ravenclaw in front of him. When the boy angrily turned to see who was beating up on him, Astin quickly pointed at the person to his right, a Gryffindor who hadn't even managed to make the feather move yet. Well. He could have picked a better person to blame, perhaps.
With a glare, the Ravenclaw turned back around. Astin grimaced and turned his attention to the last object: a glass of water. This was not going to end well.
But he'd at least gotten the other objects to move, right? That made him stand up a little straighter. He'd just have to try really hard. He nodded to himself, earning a few strange looks from the people around him, and pointed his wand at the glass.
Swish and flick. "Wingardium Leviosa."
The glass did float. Before he had time to rejoice, however, it promptly upturned itself-- spilling every last drop of water onto the floor-- hovered there for a moment, and then crashed to the ground, shattering into a million tiny shards.
Well. At least it had floated.... right?
