Veronica Sawyer stood at the front of her class, her lips drawn into a tight line, she watched as her students started filling in the once empty space. Looking around the room, she began to smile, curious faces met her and she began to speak, "Hello students, welcome to Arithmancy. Now this class will be one of the toughest you will take and not all of you will pass, or even stay to get a final grade. But no worries, today we will learn the meaning of Arithmancy and what it is used for." She waved her wand slightly and the chalk began writing on the chalkboard beside her.
"Now, please open your books to page 2 and follow along.
The most basic form of arithmancy is used with the names of people you want more information about. First, you must convert the name into a number. Each letter of the alphabet corresponds to a number, as shown in this chart:
That's simple enough, now we will take a name at random, say Hermione Granger and we will convert that into the numbers." The chalk began writing Hermione Granger and the number's below it.
"Next, you "reduce" your number by adding your numbers together until all you are left with is one digit. This is your character number, each number corresponds to the type of character you have, we will look at that chart later on. Here's an example of Herminone's character number:" Once again the chalk began writing.
8 + 5 + 9 + 4 + 9 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 7 + 5 + 9 = 94
9 + 4 = 13
1 + 3 = 4
Veronica looked around the room, some of her kids looked extremely frustrated, and this was only the first day. "Please remember to be taking notes, this isn't easy, and you won't remember most of it without writing it down. Your homework for tonight is to convert your own name into numbers and figuring out your character number. Get started." Veronica turned to sit at her desk, waving her wand the chalk dropped into her hand.
