James sat down next to Sirius the second he saw him. He began pouring himself some pumpkin juice and he offered Sirius a glass. "Here, mate, take this. It's wicked good." Practically shoving the glass into his friend's hand, he grinned at him and stuffed a sausage into his own mouth. He looked up, wondering when the owls were coming in. He had been waiting for a package from his mom. He wouldn't ever admit this out loud to anyone but he had forgotten his lucky underwear at home, and he needed it for Quidditch tryouts. Shaking that thought from his head, he glanced over at Sirius, shoving more sausage into his mouth. ""Wuff wong?"

She smiled when he poured her some juice. "Bella's going to tutor me in Defense. She's nice really. I only hope I can learn quickly" She sipped the pumpkin juice. "Delicious" she looked up at him with the most happy expression.

"Here, mate, take this. It's wicked good." James's voice snapped Sirius back to earth as a cup of juice was shoved into his grasp. He felt desolate, and the look on his face must not have been very different because James asked, with a mouth full of sausage no less, "Wuff wrong?"
Sirius opened his mouth to answer, yet no sound came out. The owls were pouring in, and the sinking feeling in his stomach was getting so bad he wasn't sure he'd have a stomach for much longer. A handsome black owl with gray feathers on its breast landed in front of Sirius and ruffled its feathers importantly, sticking its leg out to reveal, much to Sirius's growing dismay, a crimson letter. His eyes widened and he took the letter with slightly shaking fingers.
As soon as it was opened, the owl took off and the letter exploded, the voice inside carrying over the entire Great Hall.
"SIRIUS ORION BLACK! I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH YOU I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START! HOW DARE YOU IMPUNE THE FAMILY HONOR?! GRYFFINDOR, I TELL YOU! GRYFFINDOR! OF ALL THE PLACES TO BE SORTED! YOUR FATHER AND I ARE EXTREMELY DISSAPOINTED IN YOU, YOUNG MAN! WE WERE COUNTING ON OUR ELDEST SON TO MAKE US PROUD, BUT, AS USUAL, OUR FAITH WAS CLEARLY MISPLACED! WHEN YOU GET HOME, YOU'RE GOING TO BE GROUNDED! DO YOU HEAR ME?! I HOPE YOU'RE SATISFIED WITH YOURSELF!"
As the voice died and the letter burst into flames, Sirius shrank down as far as he could into his chair, his face beet red. Oh, God...why me? was his only thought as he struggled not to cry.

The unmistakable voice of her Aunt Walburga flooded the Great Hall and Andy immediately knew what had happened; she looked over at her favorite cousin, Sirius, and a sympathetic look swept over her features as she took in his shrunken look. Poor kid. She'd had it rough with Ravenclaw; she couldn't even imagine how his family would take Gryffindor. Obviosuly, very hard, if that howler was of any indication.
Getting up and leaving her books at the Ravenclaw table, she moved over to the Gryffindor table and placed a hand on Sirius's shoulder. "Hey, kid. How you holding up?" she asked sympathetically.

"Bella's going to tutor me in Defense. She's nice really. I only hope I can learn quickly." Severus smiled a little. "That's good to hear. It sounds as if she knows her stuff."
She sipped her pumpkin juice and murmured, "Delicious." He was about to reply when a shrieking, magnified voice swept over the Great Hall. Glancing up, he saw the Black boy staring, horrified as a crimson letter shrieked at him about what a disappointment he was and how he had impugned the family honor. He had to admit, he felt a bit of pity for the boy. He couldn't imagine how embarrassing that would be.
"Sheesh," he muttered and took a bite of toast.

"Hey, kid. How you holding up?" Sirius looked up when he felt a hand on his shoulder and met the eyes of his favorite cousin, Andromeda. "I--."
He fumbled for the right words. God, this was so embarrassing! "I-I'm fine," he stammered. "Or rather...I'm getting there."
He looked down again, pushing his eggs around his plate.

Andy took a seat next to him, ignoring the odd looks of the other Gryffindors. "Yeah, it'll take a minute to sort through all the conflicting feelings. On the one hand, you're proud to be a Gryffindor, and your family's always been riding your case and it feels good to be liberated from their expectations. But now you have to deal with the fact that despite all that, you still love your crazy family and secretly wanted their approval. Trust me, it gets easier." She smiled at him, rubbing a soothing circle on his back.
"So, Si-si, who's your friend there with the glasses?"

Sirius managed a weak smile as he listened to her encouraging words. She was right...about everything. "Yeah...you're right, Andy. I shouldn't be moping. I guess I'm still responding to the shock."
She's right...I do love them but no matter what they say, I AM proud to be a Gryffindor. With a fierce look of determination, he made a silent vow to himself to always be proud of what he was, no matter who tried to pull him down. Feeling slightly more confident, and regaining some of his swagger, he beamed and answered her question. "Oh, this is James Potter. I saved him from drowning the first night we got here."
He grinned evilly, as if daring his friend to deny it, and scooted over so Andy could have more room.

James blinked, staring at the howler with wide eyes. If it had been any louder, his hair would have blown back and stood up straight. He cleared his throat and glanced at Sirius, who looked like he was on the verge of tears. James's face darkened and he looked down, unsure of what to say. He definitely knew it wasn't his place, but...Sirius looked so upset. He wanted to comfort him somehow but nothing came to mind. He opened his mouth, however, and began to say something, but he was interrupted by a girl. They must know each other, the way they're talking. A relative? Maybe. Most likely. He looked down and let them talk, piling more food on his plate. He wasn't sure if he'd be able to eat all of it, but it beat just sitting there.
"So, Si-si, who's your friend there with the glasses?"
James blinked. Si-Si? Pfft. He turned to greet her but stopped when Sirius spoke in return.
"Oh, this is James Potter. I saved him from drowning the first night we got here."
"Hey! Don't go around making up lies! You didn't save me--OK, maybe you saved me, but--Shut up!" He took a sausage and stuffed it in Sirius's mouth, then burst out laughing. He grinned up at Andromeda and held out his hand for a shake. "Nice to meet you."

Sirius grinned devilishly as James answered. "Hey! Don't go around making up lies! You didn't save me--OK, maybe you saved me, but--Shut up!" Before he could come up with a witty reply, however, a piece of sausage had become lodged in his esophagus. He choked and glared as James placidly replied, "Nice to meet you."
Finally, with much effort and a large swallow of pumpkin juice, he managed to get it down. "Ugh...do you enjoy torturing me?"

"Yup!" James grinned, taking his hand away from Andromeda before she could actually shake it and clasped Sirius on the back with force. He leaned forward so that their faces were inches away and he grinned. "Come on, mate. Learn to see the happy sides of life. You can't be a grumpypuss forever..." He stuck his hands in front of Sirius's face and wiggled his fingers, slowly retracting his hands. He laughed and looked down at his plate to pick up some food. Despite everything, he was still pretty hungry. Besides, he'd be able to help Sirius better if there was actually food in his system.

"Come on, mate. Learn to see the happy sides of life. You can't be a grumpypuss forever..." James's words echoed in his head and he felt a plan hatching as he tried to ignore the stinging on his back. Oh, so that's how you want to play it, huh? With a dramatic sigh, he swung his legs round like he was going to get off the chair and leave. "You're right, mate. Maybe I should go collect my thoughts." As he was saying this, he grabbed the pitcher of pumpkin juice. Andy's body was blocking his hand from view. "But first...there's something on your face." Before James could reply, he dumped the pitcher of juice on him. "Let me wash it off for you!" With a laugh, he tore from the Hall.
"See ya! Thanks, Andy!"

Severus had seen enough. Could Potter and Black be any more immature and idiotic? Sticking food down each other's faces and running around like five year olds...really. He sighed and finished his breakfast, glancing over at Night. "Let me know when you're ready to go." He was trying to keep the demand out of his voice, but it was there, underlying. He just didn't like being in the same room with those two imbeciles if he could help it.
He glanced down at his schedule suddenly, upon instinct, and groaned. Slytherin had classes with the Gryffindors almost all day. Great...

James gasped, closing his eyes instinctively. Everything turned to slow-motion. He saw the juice fly out of the pitcher and towards his face. He felt the thick, viscous liquid hit him and slide down his face and clothes. Oh, this would not do. He stood up, wiping the juice off of his face and began running after Sirius. "You git! You're as good as dead, you hear me?! DEAD!" He laughed softly to himself and followed him out of the Great Hall, ignoring all of the stares he received from his outburst.

Night looked up from her pancakes. She had been thinking how awesome it was to have breatfest with one of the handsomest guys in the school when he mentioned for her to tell him when she was ready to leave. She wondered what was up and looked around. There at the gryffindor table were those idiots from before and she glared there way. However the howler made her a bit on edge. She felt sympathy but not enough to cover up her feelings about the boys bothering her Severus. Wait... 'My' Severus... He's not mine... she had to mentally correct herself before finishing her food.
"I'm ready, Severus. Where would you like to go? I hear the courtyard is quite nice. And quiet as well." She stood and offered a hand to help him up.
