Points will be deducted for moderate to severe wounds such as broken bones, and bites. A vial of the anti-venom is on hand in the event that you do get bitten. Remember, the venom will only paralyze you, and acromantulas have a deep magic resistance. Good luck![/color]

Dastan was ready for the D.A.D.A. O.W.L. More than ready, in fact. He'd faced Dark Arts for real, multiple times, so why would this be any different? In fact, he was willing to bet it would be his best exam ever.
He confidently strode into the room...and promptly froze when he took in the form of the shopkeeper from Hogsmeade, Fantasia. Blinking and looking around for Professor Lovegood, Dastan was surprised not to find her. Apparently, she'd gotten ill or something. Shrugging and taking a seat, Dastan quickly filled out the answers to the written portion of the exam, and then waited until he was called in for the practical.
In the room where the practical was to be taken, there wasn't much. It was basically big and empty, except for a big box in the center of the room.
"Alright. Bring it on, whatever it is." The box was opened, and immediately, a moderately sized acromantula crawled out. Dastan fought the urge to laugh. Acromantulas? He'd faced a million of these; they lived in the woods by his home. He had this in the bag...or not, he realized, when he was told that he couldn't kill it. How was he supposed to defeat it without killing it? Not to mention, he'd never faced one of these things while injured before, and his injuries from the labyrinth hadn't quite healed yet. Not even close, actually.
The spider didn't wait for him to think, however, and it immediately launched itself at him. He dodged to the side, wincing when that put undue pressure on his already injured knee, but kept moving, throwing himself into a dodge roll and then coming onto his feet.
Oh, Merlin, that hurt...Shit! He didn't have time to complain about his old injuries before the spider was spitting at him, its length of web trying to grab and incapacitate him so it could poison and eat him later. He wasn't going to have any of that. He dodged once more and hissed, then turned around. He needed to end this quickly.
"Arania exumai!" he called the only spell he knew that would work on an acromantula, and a white light shot out of his wand, hitting the spider. He held back, however, in order to prevent using lethal force. He was not about to lose points for killing something he wasn't supposed to kill. When the light hit the spider, it was bounced into the air and came back down with a loud thump, kicking up dust and blowing it in his face.
He heaved a sigh of relief. "That...wasn't so bad," he said, his wince belying the pain in his knee. He wished he'd been more up to par for this fight. He'd have finished it in two minutes, flat. As it were, he couldn't change that he had already been injured coming into this exam. He only hoped that it didn't get him points deducted.

Astin was actually way too excited about his D.A.D.A. owl. This was what he was good at. Book work? No. Following directions? No. Defending himself, on the other hand? That he could do. He could improvise and think on his feet, for the most part; sure, he'd been injured quite a lot on his adventures with Dastan, but he was alive, wasn't he? Not many fifteen-year-old boys could say that after having faced a Death Eater, especially Antonin Dolohov.
So, for some odd reason, Astin was confident that he could do well on this O.W.L. He zipped through the written exam-- it was a piece of cake. He'd never been happier with himself. Apparently his studying and researching for his upcoming task had been of use for something, even if not for his actual spellwork.
He was called into for his practical after Dastan. As they passed each other, Astin shot Das a smile and squeezed his arm. He hoped Dastan's practical had gone well; of course, he was sure it had, seeing as it was Dastan. Even so, he had to wonder how Das had done with his injured knee.
He supposed he'd find out later. For now, he had his own test to do.
He entered the room. It looked like nothing out of the ordinary-- stone walls, stone floor, no portraits or tapestries to note. The only thing worth noticing was the box in the dead center of the room. Astin gave a cursory glance to the rest of the room then redirected his attention. Apparently he'd be fighting whatever was in the box. He pulled out his wand and stepped into a defensive stance, then nodded to show he was ready.
A giant spider almost immediately lurched at him. Instinctively, Astin rolled out of the way. However, he had misjudged his distance, and ended up smacking his head none too lightly on the wall. He had little time to be upset about a little bump on his head, though, as the spider was back after him. What were those things called again? Acromantulas, right?
Astin jumped to his feet. What was that spell Dastan had always used? He couldn't remember it, and he'd never tried it before. Besides, he wasn't supposed to kill the thing, and he was pretty sure that that was what Das had used it for.
Maybe he could just... confuse it a little. Incapacitating could come once it wasn't out for his blood so much.
"Confundo!" he called. The spell hit the acromantula, knocking it back, but the spider continued to race after him. Of course. Why would anything be easy? He wondered how much he was allowed to hurt it. He could think of a few ways to incapacitate it without killing it, but he wasn't sure if he was allowed to remove its legs.
Dammit, what was that spell? It was just in the back of his mind. But he couldn't think while he was being chased around by that stupid spider.
Wait. Acromantulas were terrified of basilisks, weren't they? Astin knew just the thing.
"Serpensortia!" A snake resembling a basilisk, although much, much smaller and much less deadly, burst from the tip of Astin's wand. It gave the spider pause, and Astin breathed a sigh of relief. While the two creatures began circling each other, he racked his brain. He knew that spell. He did. What was it... aha!
"Arania exumai!" A white light hit the acromantula, knocking it back a couple feet. It didn't move.
Crap. I killed it.
Hesitantly, Astin approached the motionless spider. He was told quite clearly not to kill it, and he didn't want points deducted because he'd gotten a little carried away. He poked it lightly with the tip of his wand.
It gave an irritated twitch.
Astin grinned, relieved. He'd done it, then. He couldn't wait to get his scores back.
