(OOC: We get tired of waiting, Freya. Sorry, chica! XD You can respond later.)
Caitlyn's power rose up all around the three of them and wiped out the remaining light in the corridor, leaving them in complete darkness. An unnatural wind swept up Rae's bright red hair, and her heart sank in her chest. She hated the darkness. So much.
She was already scared of the upperclassman Slytherin girl's attack, but couple that with Caitlyn's cold aura and complete darkness, and Rae's knees turned promptly to jell-o and she collapsed back against the wall, feeling the water there begin to freeze because of Caitlyn's strength. Rae whimpered a bit and looked around, but as she suspected, she couldn't see a single thing.
"How about this?" Caitlyn's voice growled in the darkness, "You never even think about touching a hair on her little red head, and you walk out mostly unscathed. You come near either of us again, and I show you what suffering means."
It touched her that Caitlyn was willing to protect her; Of course, she knew it wasn't her personally that the other girl wanted to protect, but just weak and pathetic people in general. But still, she liked the idea that she had something between her and the random attacks of the blonde. Even so, Rae could barely control her power anymore. She was terrified of this darkness, of this feeling of being underground with a threat possibly not two feet away. She sank to the ground, her eyes wide in the darkness.
"Can we not fight?" she said, but her voice was weak and didn't seem to carry well. It probably would do nothing to assuage the tempers of the two Slytherins Rae found herself surrounded by, and every second that she was in darkness, little tendrils of her magic were slipping out of her control, throbbing with her every frenzied heartbeat.

"Can we not fight?"
Caitlyn heard the weak question from somewhere behind her, and she lowered her wand an inch. The wind stilled almost immediately, and the torches, magically charmed, slowly flickered back to life. Such a sudden release of power made her a little woozy, and she touched her hand to the wall for a little support. It was hard to tell which way was up. Still, she wasn't going to seem completely weak.
"Fine. I think I've made my point clear enough." With one last glare, Caitlyn turned away to face Gemma. When had she collapsed against the wall? Caitlyn couldn't recall. She couldn't recall much of anything, actually, except her anger and the fact that the upperclassman had tried to curse them.
She moved over to Gemma and nudged her leg with a black boot. "Come on. We have more classes than Potions." A part of her wanted to help Gemma stand, but she didn't. She wasn't the helpful type, regardless of her future career goals. Gemma was perfectly capable of standing on her own. If she weren't, Caitlyn would of course feel obligated to help, as they probably should have turned tail and ran. But Gemma hadn't been injured. If she was just too afraid to walk or something else ridiculous, that was her own problem.
Without waiting for Gemma to stand or reply, Caitlyn started walking away. She needed to find somewhere to sit down before she collapsed, too. All her limbs felt heavy, and her hands were shaky. Expending that much uncontrolled power in one go was not an easy feat, no matter how much she was trying to play it off like it was nothing.

Rae could physically feel her fear fade as the lights lit themselves back up. She closed her eyes and swallowed; she sure was a sad excuse for a Gryffindor wasn't she? That hat had definitely made a mistake. A big one. She wasn't brave or courageous or any of that stuff really, no matter what Aunt Rosie said.
"Fine. I think I've made my point clear enough." Caitlyn glared once more at the other Slytherin girl and then turned to her and then nudged her leg with one of her feet. Rae stirred out of her fear-induced state, her magic folding itself back inside of her now that the perceived threat seemed to have calmed a bit. Her relief was tangible. "Come on," Caitlyn continued, "We have more classes than Potions."
Rae scrambled to her feet, but Caitlyn was already walking away, seeming to be unsteady. As the other girl rounded a corner, Rae turned to face the blonde girl. "You really didn't have to be such a jerk, you know. I would've moved if you'd asked," Rae said, then, hoping she hadn't poked the tiger again, she all but ran down the hall to catch up to Caitlyn, who didn't look well at all. "Are you okay?" Rae asked, her brows knitting in concern for the other girl.
Why did Rae always end up making people sick? She should have known the other girl was coming; should have paid more attention, maybe. She should have ducked out of the way before the upperclassman had had a chance to run into her. Once again, she was proving to herself that her mother had been right from the start; she only got people into trouble. She'd have to make it up to Caitlyn somehow, and she wouldn't leave her alone until she did.

"Are you okay?"
When was the last time anyone had asked her that? Even if Gemma was only asking out of a sense of obligation or responsibility... Caitlyn hadn't had anyone bother to notice how she felt in too long. It was odd, that a girl she'd barely met would ask her that before the man who had raised her or before people she had known her whole life.
"I, uh, I'm," Caitlyn said, fumbling for a response. What did people normally say to a question like that? She couldn't say the truth. She wasn't going to admit that what she'd done had been stupid or ill-advised. She had done it for Gemma whether she liked it or not, and she was going to pretend that it hadn't affected her in the slightest. It wasn't as if Gemma was important to her. No one was.
So why did it matter so much what she replied? Ah. That was the problem.
"Whatever," Caitlyn eventually settled on, her head down to hide a slight blush. Sarcastic comebacks she could do. Answering actual questions? Not so much, apparently. She blamed it all on the stupid dungeons and her current exhaustion, although if she were being truthful with herself, she knew that neither of those factored into her fumbled words quite so much as the question itself had.
Still, she needed to get out. She would retire to her common room, but then she'd have to turn back the other way, and who knew what would happen then? She could possibly run into that blonde girl again. That would not be good. Gemma had kept her from cursing her the last time; she wouldn't be there if Caitlyn decided to head back.
Caitlyn wondered where a good place to take a breather would be. She'd have to look once they were back on ground level or better.
Speaking of back on ground level... where were the stairs again?

"I, uh, I'm," Caitlyn seemed to be fumbling for some kind of response, which surprised Rae quite a lot. In the short time she'd known Caitlyn, the girl always had some kind of snappy comeback. When she'd asked the question, she'd half expected a slap(that's what her mother would have done, anyways), but she certainly hadn't thought that Caitlyn would be struck speechless. "Whatever," Caitlyn finally said, looking away.
Was that...a blush? It couldn't be; maybe Caitlyn had a fever? More concerned now, and suspecting that they were kind of lost by the look on Cait's face, Rae jogged to stand in front of Caitlyn. "Why don't we stop for a minute? You...really don't look good, and I think we've put enough space between us and the mean girl now." She hoped so, at least.
If the blonde came running after them, she didn't know what she'd do. Caitlyn wasn't in any shape to be protecting her, and Rae was all but useless in, well, everything. "Why don't you sit down?" Rae looked around, trying to see some kind of seat, but there wasn't anything like that, so she shrugged off her robes, revealing muggle clothing that was just as bright as her hair, though it was different shades altogether, and setting the robes on the wet ground to provide a sitting place.
"There," Rae said proudly, motioning at her makeshift seat.

"Why don't we stop for a minute? You...really don't look good, and I think we've put enough space between us and the mean girl now."
Caitlyn rolled her eyes. A bit of spell exhaustion wouldn't kill her, but waiting around in the dungeons in case that blond girl decided to return very well might; after all, it wasn't like she could defend herself much now. "I'm fine." But Gemma was ignoring her, apparently.
"Why don't you sit down?"
"Does it look like there's a place to sit?" she said. Gemma was thinking the same thing, it seemed, looking around. She still rather looked like an owl, something Caitlyn found somewhat intriguing. Weren't owls supposed to be wise and omniscient? Perhaps this owl had smacked into a window a few too many times.
Gemma shrugged off her robes and placed them on the ground. "There." Caitlyn raised an eyebrow. Did she honestly expect Caitlyn to sit in the dungeons on someone else's robes just because she was a tiny bit tired? That was not happening. She was not going to admit that she needed a break; she didn't. And what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.
Besides, sitting would require spending even more time with Gemma. Caitlyn didn't like the way she got under her skin so easily, made her pick fights, and caused her to stumble over her answers. She wanted to get back to somewhere, anywhere, where she was secure inside her own mind. That likely wasn't going to happen sitting alone with Gemma.
"I am not sitting there," she said firmly. "Feel free to take a breather, but I'm going to keep moving."

"I am not sitting there. Feel free to take a breather, but I'm going to keep moving."
Rae frowned at Caitlyn. "But it's obvious that you're about to fall over," she said, ignoring the bit about her taking a breather; She didn't need one. She hadn't been the one that had exhausted herself, "And if it's something about not wanting to be stuck sitting with me, I'll be quiet, I promise. I won't make a peep. You won't even know I'm there. But I don't want you to collapse or something. I'd be so worried!"
That was true. Rae not only felt responsible for Caitlyn's state, but she also didn't like seeing other people down or hurt or not feeling well; it made her sad. Last year, at her muggle school, one of her classmates had had an asthma attack and Rae had felt so horrible and panicked; she was a natural worrier. She wasn't sure why that was; she'd never been particularly close to anybody else, outside of her Aunt Rosie and maybe one little muggle girl who didn't treat her like a freak for whatever reason. Nevertheless, she was a bleeding heart and she knew it.
Rae quickly threw a glance down the hallway to make sure that the blonde upperclassman hadn't followed them; so far, so good. Caitlyn could afford to sit for a minute at least. Spell exhaustion wasn't generally life threatening, unless you really went overboard. And the fact that Cait was still conscious meant that no, she hadn't gone quite overboard yet, though she had taxed herself more than she should have.
"Sit for just a minute?" she added on with one of her customary pleading looks. She'd die of the guilt if Caitlyn collapsed or something because of protecting her.

Caitlyn still wanted to argue, but Gemma just gave her that pleading look again, and she couldn't say no. Besides, she had to admit, however begrudgingly, that Gemma did have a point. She probably could use a small break. Especially if Gemma could keep her stupid, annoying mouth shut, maybe they could sit for a moment.
"Fine," she muttered, plopping down on top of Gemma's robes. Rude or not, Gemma was the one who had put them on the ground; Caitlyn wasn't about to refuse. If the girl liked having dirty, damp clothing, that was her problem, not Caitlyn's. "And not a word," she warned threateningly.
She leaned her back against the cold wall, feeling moisture seep into her clothes. But she couldn't be bothered to care enough to move, and she certainly felt too heavy to attempt it. She wasn't sure if she could move if she wanted, now that she'd stopped denying her fatigue altogether. The back of her head also met the wall, her hair clinging to it. Perhaps she'd just rest her eyes for a moment...
Exhaustion had taken hold on her too suddenly, and now that she was off her feet, she couldn't fight it. So, for some unknown reason, Caitlyn let her guard down long enough to relax against the wall, close her eyes, and drift into the world of slumber. Before she knew it, sleep had her firmly in its clutches.

"Fine. And not a word," Caitlyn muttered, taking a seat on the robes and leaning back against the wall. Rae smiled brightly at her, happy about her victory.
"Yay!" she said, clapping her hands. It wasn't every day that she managed to win a battle of any sort.
Rae had promised not to say a word, so she'd tried to glance off to the side and not talk. But then she couldn't stay completely silent about everything; she wanted to say just one thing. "Cait...I just wanted to..."
She looked at the other girl and was astonished to find her sleeping. Her jaw nearly dropped. Had she really been that tired? Rae felt guilty all over again, but also, a part of her was pleased. Here was this Slytherin girl who seemed to make an art of being guarded and sarcastic, sound asleep with another girl, one that she didn't make a secret of disliking. She had completely let her guard down, even if for just a moment.
She looks really peaceful, Rae thought, smiling as she sat back against the opposite wall, ignoring the moisture that seeped through her muggle clothing. "Thank you for protecting me and helping me," Rae said, finishing her thoughts from before even though she knew Caitlyn wouldn't respond, nor could she hear her.
Closing her eyes, but not falling asleep, Rae began humming an old hymn to herself, just to fill the silence of the dungeons. She still found this place to be slightly terrifying, but she felt safer, just knowing Caitlyn was there.

Caitlyn was in her own mind, trapped within a dream. She didn't hear a word Gemma said. Instead, all she heard were spiteful words that tore her in two, spoken by her own flesh and blood.
"You're useless," they said, "You don't deserve your mother's name."
Sleeping, Caitlyn curled into herself slightly. I know. I didn't want it. She trembled with repressed sobs; even while unconscious, she didn't let herself cry. Crying wasn't in her genetic makeup. But shaking, she could do-- couldn't help but do. Her whole body seemed to agree with her father's (admittedly fictional) words, although her mind screamed its feeble protests.
But something else, something brighter and more pleasant, cut through the fabric of darkness. Something gentle and kind was breaking the spell of self-loathing, and slowly, Caitlyn woke.
She immediately felt uneasy, recalling the odd pseudo-dream she'd had. Although she would never admit it in a thousand years, this wasn't the first time she'd had thoughts of that sort-- unconscious and not. She couldn't help but feel like her mother wouldn't be proud of her or that her father wasn't, that she wasn't deserving of their pride; she knew sometimes that was true. Like when she'd been unnecessarily mean to Gemma. Perhaps she owed her an apology. Unfortunately, Caitlyn was about as prone to apologizing as she was to crying.
Then it occurred to her that something had woken her. What was it again...? She'd heard something, hadn't she?
Her foggy mind suddenly noticed that Gemma was humming. Had that woken her? Sitting up, Caitlyn cast a glance to Gemma. She was a bit of an enigma to someone who was so used to putting up walls and keeping people out, protecting herself from letting others get too close... protecting others from the pain her coldness would eventually cause, regardless. As much as a tiny-- very tiny, negligible-- part of her wanted to let Gemma in, much like she'd wanted to let others in before her, Caitlyn couldn't do that. She couldn't not hurt people.
Even if Gemma was a mystery, Caitlyn would have to keep her at a safe distance. And that safe distance definitely did not involve sleeping in the dungeons next to her. So, Caitlyn stood, forcing her sluggish limbs to submit to her will. Mind over matter and all.

Rae nearly jumped seventy feet in the air when Caitlyn suddenly moved to her feet without any warning. Quickly moving to get up as well, Rae nearly tripped in her haste. She wasn't exactly the most graceful creature in the world and everything.
"I didn't know you were awake," Rae said, smiling sheepishly and tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Did you sleep well?"
As Rae looked at the other girl, she couldn't help but make note of how different Caitlyn looked from when she had been asleep. Her expression was more guarded and determined, where in her sleep it had been almost calm and tranquil, and Caitlyn had actually looked like her age. She couldn't be much older than Gemma, after all. They were both first years. Now, awake, Caitlyn seemed wise beyond her years and more guarded than ever. The contrast was almost startling.
"You looked really peaceful when you were asleep," Rae said without thinking, "So if my humming woke you up, I'm sorry. I didn't think it would make a difference. This place is just really scary, you know? And I thought, hey, it's too quiet, I need to make some kind of noise. I know I said I wouldn't make a peep though. So, I guess I messed up. I just didn't think..."
Rae trailed off, looking once again at Caitlyn, then glancing quickly away. Something was almost different about Caitlyn now that she was awake. There was a kind of pain in her eyes that, before, Rae hadn't noticed. She wondered if Caitlyn had had a nightmare.
Looking back at the other girl, and knowing she might end up regretting what she said next because Caitlyn wouldn't take well to her prying, Rae couldn't help but say, "Did you have a nightmare? I have them a lot. But...they're not real, you know? Sometimes, it helps if I talk about it to someone, though usually I only had my aunt to talk to...other kids don't like me much..." Rae shook her head, "But if you want to talk about it, you can."

Caitlyn glared darkly. It was none of Gemma's business, and it hadn't been a nightmare, anyway. It was just... an insecurity she had-- one that Gemma need never know of. It was stupid to even think things like that; Caitlyn didn't want reports of her ridiculous self-esteem issues to to get out. She didn't even want to admit to herself that she had self-esteem issues; she'd spent her time painting herself to be an untouchable force, far removed from concerning herself with those types of affairs. Apparently fooling oneself was harder than fooling everyone else.
"It doesn't surprise me," she muttered, "That you have nightmares. Seems like the lame type of thing losers like you do." Losers like me do, her conscience auto-corrected. But she wasn't about to let Gemma in on that. Perhaps if she was as brutal as possible, the other girl would take a hint and go find someone else to befriend. It had to have been apparent already that Caitlyn wasn't the best candidate for a good friend, or even a good acquaintance. And she wasn't going to bother getting attached to someone else. She couldn't. Perhaps it was time to be even meaner. "And I can't see why even your aunt would want to listen to your stupid nightmares."
There. If that didn't do it, Caitlyn didn't know what would. She didn't want people to hate her, but that was how everyone functioned best. If everyone stayed away from her and minded their own business, then things would all be fine. That was how society worked. At least, that was how it worked when it came to her life. Gemma needed to stay out of it.
Crossing her arms, Caitlyn leveled another glare at Gemma. "Well? Can we go yet?" she asked impatiently.
Oh yeah. There was no way even Gemma could want to be near her after today.

"It doesn't surprise me that you have nightmares. Seems like the lame type of thing losers like you do. And I can't see why even your aunt would want to listen to your stupid nightmares."
Rae winced; she'd asked for it, honestly, but it still hurt to hear. She fought down some tears again; she wasn't a crybaby. Honest, she wasn't. Okay, maybe she was a little bit. But she was a kid. She wished Caitlyn could be more like a kid; they were just eleven. Why shouldn't they act like it?
"Well? Can we go yet?"
"Y-yeah," she said, quickly wiping at her eyes. She still had a debt to pay, and that was one thing that was very Gryffindor about her, nevermind that other stuff. She had to think of a way to make it up to Caitlyn for helping her and then protecting her from her Housemate.
Rae began walking, then she stopped, turned around, and picked up her wrinkled and wet robes off the ground. It wouldn't do to leave that there for the House Elves to pick up later; she was nothing if not polite. That done, she turned to face Caitlyn.
"You know, my aunt didn't want to listen to my stupid nightmares. But she did it anyways. She didn't even have to take me in, but she came and she took me away and gave me something close to happiness. All because she loved me, and that's what people are supposed to do for each other. I don't know what's wrong in your life, Cait. But I pray that one day, you'll find someone that will come and save you from it, too, just like my aunt saved me." Rae took a deep breath and then pressed on through the corridors of the dungeon. Halfway up, she turned back to Caitlyn.
"Are we going to go now? We still have a couple classes to find."

I don't know what's wrong in your life, Cait. But I pray that one day, you'll find someone that will come and save you from it, too, just like my aunt saved me."
Caitlyn's glare darkened. If looks could kill, they'd be finding Gemma's body on the cold stone floor later on in the night. Unfortunately, no matter how many daggers she shot to the unnatural redhead, it didn't seem to be working. And Caitlyn had absolutely no power left in her to use to her advantage, either. But that didn't mean that this weakness meant she had to let Gemma win. Because she didn't, and she wouldn't.
"Are we going to go now? We still have a couple classes to find."
"I never said anything was wrong with my life," she snarled, pushing past Gemma. "You're the one with the issues." It was easier to pretend that everything was perfect in front of others. Put on a face and not let anything or anyone touch you. But one thing she couldn't do was actually admit that her life wasn't great, or that she just didn't want to be let down again. She didn't want anyone else trying to play the hero in her life. And Gemma needed to know that. "I don't need a savior. I need idiots like you to stay out of my way. And in case I wasn't clear enough the first time, my name is Caitlyn. Not Cait. Not Lyn. Not anything else your stupid brain can come up with."
That said, Caitlyn kept walking. She didn't bother turning around to see if Gemma was following. And she was finding that she cared less and less if she did.
Caitlyn knew that she didn't fit in. She didn't act her age much, either. But how could she? She couldn't act like an eleven-year-old girl with an alcoholic father taking care of her. She had to learn to fend for herself. If it took pushing others to the side to survive, Caitlyn had to do it. She couldn't let anyone get to her enough to let her break down. She couldn't destroy the walls she'd built. She wasn't even sure she knew how anymore.

"I never said anything was wrong with my life. You're the one with the issues. I don't need a savior. I need idiots like you to stay out of my way. And in case I wasn't clear enough the first time, my name is Caitlyn. Not Cait. Not Lyn. Not anything else your stupid brain can come up with."
Rae sighed and rolled her eyes, jogging to keep up with Caitlyn. "You're right. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have called you something I knew you wouldn't like, but it slipped. It's easier for my 'stupid brain' to comprehend. You know, short sentences and less syllables." Rae then glanced off to the side, taking in the still-creepy dungeons then she looked at the girl beside her once more. She didn't know whether she should say what she was thinking or not. No doubt Caitlyn would prefer that she not.
Rae tucked her robes back around her arm, making a face at their wetness. You'd think that a big magic castle would have some kind of protection against wetness in the building. She felt bad for anyone who had to come down here regularly. Weren't the Slytherin common rooms around here someplace? She hoped Caitlyn wouldn't catch a cold.
"Still," Rae decided to speak her mind; who said she couldn't be as reckless as the other Gryffindors? "Nobody's life is perfect, Caitlyn. And the sooner you admit that yours isn't either, the sooner you'll feel better. Whether you think you need a savior or not, you could always do with some kind of friend."
Rae jogged faster so she could stand in front of Caitlyn again. "I don't expect that you'll ever like me. I wouldn't ask that of anyone. In fact, I'm sure you're about to insult me and tell me how stupid I am and how little you need a friend. But, whether you like me or not, I like you and I want to be your friend whenever you need one. You don't even have to pretend to be a friend to me back; I just want to be useful to you in some way."
Rae turned then so she wouldn't get shoved by Caitlyn, which she half-expected, and then grinned as her dark eyes lighted on a very welcome sight. "Look, the stairs! What class are we going to look for next?" she called delightedly, as if she hadn't just signed her death warrant by declaring her friendly intentions to the Slytherin girl.
