"Look, the stairs! What class are we going to look for next?"
Caitlyn wanted to hit her. Hard. She refrained, but only barely. "How about you go play in the Forbidden Forest? I'm sure there's some sort of giant stomach waiting out there that would love to be your friend. And then you can get a friend and I can get you to finally leave me alone. Get it through your thick skull that you are nothing to me. You. Are. Useless. You want to be useful for me? The most useful thing you can do is go away."
Ten minutes ago and Caitlyn would have felt guilt for being so blatantly horrible. However, Gemma had perpetuated this; she should have just shut up and walked away after Caitlyn first started insulting and berating her. If she was dumb enough to stay and make weak attempts at fighting back, then she deserved whatever Caitlyn threw at her. She should just learn that Slytherins weren't the best people to pester if one wanted friendship. The sooner she learned that, the sooner she'd be able to stop being disappointed by everyone she met.
Because that was all Caitlyn could be. It was all she knew how to be. The only places she didn't disappoint was in her sarcasm and her cold nature, so that was what she stuck to. Moving out of her comfort zone meant a risk of disappointment, both for her and for the other person.
She didn't care anymore about Gemma's feelings. She just wanted out, and the easiest and quickest way for that was to push her away. But Gemma was putting up a fight, although only Merlin knew why. Caitlyn had never been anything but outright mean to Gemma, except when she stood up to the other Slytherin, but that couldn't be entirely considered an act of selflessness. She hadn't been truly thinking of Gemma. Had she? She couldn't recall.
Shaking her head, Caitlyn marched up the stairs. Maybe Gemma would take a hint and bugger off for once.

Rae halted at that, the words hitting her a lot harder than she'd have liked them to and her hand moving to the stone wall for a minute, as if she needed the support. Useless? That stung way more than she would let on, for reasons she didn't understand. She shouldn't be hurt by words, right? Her mother had called her a lot worse: demon, abomination, abhorrent creature, wretched monster, hateful parasite...the list went on.
Nevertheless, a part of her wondered if the hurt came mostly from being shunned and insulted by someone who wasn't her mother, who she expected insults and painful punishments from. Other kids didn't particularly like her, and they could be pretty rude when they wanted to be, but mostly they'd just call her stupid, or highlighter head or bubblegum or what-have-you. To be called useless, and to be told her only use would be her absence, well, that was a little tougher to reconcile.
She's lashing out, Gemma, she told herself firmly, You said you wanted to be useful, well, she needs you so that she can release her frustration.
It didn't make the words any less painful, though, Rae found. Still, she wouldn't run away now. Choosing to ignore the part of her that hurt, Rae caught up to Caitlyn quickly.
"Have you ever been to the Forbidden Forest?" she asked. She knew the answer to that was probably no. Still, it was some kind of conversation wasn't it? "Why do you suppose it's forbidden? Do you really think there are big snakes there? Ohh...I wonder if snakes here can talk! It's a magical world, right?"

Apparently Caitlyn's wish wouldn't be granted today. It seemed that she was stuck with Gemma, at least for the time being. Maybe she'd start walking in a whole group of Slytherins. Of course, that would require socializing with the other members of her House... she wondered if they would all be as argumentative as the upperclassman she'd met earlier that day. But for now, that didn't matter; she was stuck with a stupid redheaded Gryffindor.
"Snakes speak Parseltongue," she said matter-of-factly, "And I hope you get eaten by an anaconda." The disdain was less convincing than it had been mere moments; she was tired, and she just wanted to go be alone. But to do get away from Gemma, she'd probably have to go to her common room, and she didn't want to do that either. So she was giving up. It was this or hex Gemma, which she couldn't do for a multitude of reasons, some of which she herself didn't fully understand. Dilemmas indeed.
But maybe this didn't have to be entirely bad. She could be... civil, couldn't she? She didn't have to be amiable; but perhaps she could make an attempt not to insult Gemma for five minutes, or not to explode if she didn't use her full first name. It wasn't like calling Cait was the same as Wren; it only bothered her because she didn't want anyone thinking themselves her friend. But apparently she couldn't stop that with Gemma.
Sighing, Caitlyn shook her head somewhat sadly. She really was a disappointment even at being cold. When it came down to it, she didn't want to push people away any more than the next person. The difference was that she'd drive them away in the end, anyhow, intentional or not.

"Snakes speak Parseltongue. And I hope you get eaten by an anaconda."
Rae's eyes widened. "Do anacondas really eat people?" she asked, once again ignoring the fact that she had been outright insulted and wished dead. As for the anaconda question, she'd only ever seen anacondas on the muggle television her aunt sometimes let her watch. She'd heard tons of terror stories about them, but had never figured they were capable of actually, truly eating things. "I've never seen a snake big enough to eat a person. I mean, they'd have to be totally gigantic! Right?"
Rae wondered when she'd gotten so good at being so ridiculously cheerful and capable of ignoring the meanest of jibes. She'd always figured herself to be a sensitive girl (though she hated the term 'crybaby,') and had easily been hurt by other peoples' words and actions. The upperclassman Slytherin girl had been a good example of one of those times. But with Caitlyn, she was able to rise above her normal instincts and pretend that she couldn't be hurt. She wondered what was so different about Caitlyn; she suspected it had something to do with the insight she felt she had gained by seeing Caitlyn asleep for that brief period in the dungeons. She wanted to see that unguarded, tranquil side of her more often; what's more, she wanted to be the one to bring out that other side. Caitlyn was so obviously hurt over something. She lashed out at people and Rae could tell it was her self-defense mechanisms at work. Rae wanted to help her, however she could, and in so doing, pay a debt she felt she owed to the other girl. It was worth a little pain to do that, wasn't it?
Or maybe she was just a masochist. Rae shook her head with a light smile on her face that didn't quite reach her eyes; maybe she was.
Banishing the look almost as quickly as it appeared, Rae made it to the top of the stairs ahead of Caitlyn and began walking backwards. "I wonder if they even have anacondas in the Forbidden Forest? We should go see sometime!" with that, Rae turned around and bounded up the rest of the stairs, eager to see more of Hogwarts.

"Do anacondas really eat people?"
Caitlyn raised her eyebrow and gave Gemma one of her looks. How the hell should she know the diet of an anaconda? It wasn't like she kept one in her backyard. She'd only heard that they were huge, and who knew what the things ate if not humans? And she did know that quite a few things would eat humans if hungry enough, so surely there were a few cases where an anaconda had eaten someone. Gemma needed to be added to that list.
"I wonder if they even have anacondas in the Forbidden Forest? We should go see sometime!"
"Right, because that clearly sounds like a wonderful idea. Although I'm sure they'd love to have us over for dinner." Heck, what carnivorous, over-sized beast wouldn't like to have a couple of eleven-year-olds for dinner? Snakes were probably the least of their worries in the Forbidden Forest. After all, a lot of people could defeat snakes. But that the whole forest was closed off to all students? There had to be something more sinister out there.
Caitlyn wondered what it was, and also if it too would like to eat Gemma. That would certainly make her life at Hogwarts an awful lot easier, she was sure. Perhaps she should venture into the forest later on-- with the other girl in tow, of course.
Caitlyn snorted. Like she'd ever actually be able to do that. Were Death Eaters even that evil? She doubted it. And she certainly hadn't quite reached the same level of cruelty as Death Eaters, regardless of how mean she tried to be. After all, a Death Eater could get a first year Gryffindor to leave them alone. She, apparently, could not.
Shooting yet another displeased look at Gemma, Caitlyn followed her up the stairs. This was going to be a long evening.
