"I mean, Caitlyn. Where are we headed first now that we're inside?"
Caitlyn smirked, already leading the way down. "I thought a pleasant stroll in the dungeons might do us some good." She didn't bother announcing that was where the Potions classroom was located; if Gemma didn't already know that, it was by no fault of Caitlyn's. Besides, it put her closer to the Slytherin Common Room, so she could escape there once she managed to get Gemma to back off.
It didn't take long for Caitlyn not to remember where the stairs had been. She was positive that she'd left them somewhere off to the left, but that was solid wall. This could pose a serious problem. Luckily, the path was familiar, and she knew exactly where the Potions class was. However, she wasn't sure where her common room or the stairs that led back to ground level were.
And, whether she liked it or not, she couldn't very well leave Gemma to fend for herself. She wasn't that heartless. Cold, yes. Sarcastic, indubitably. Mean, without a doubt. But outright heartless? Her goal wasn't to send Gemma into a fit of tears. She didn't handle crying people well.

"I thought a pleasant stroll in the dungeons might do us some good."
Pleasant stroll through the dungeons? Wasn't that a paradox of some kind? Or maybe it was an oxymoron? Or was it simply a contradiction? What was the difference between those anyways? And why did it matter? It was so hard to work with her mind.
She noticed the darkness the second they stepped into the dungeons. The only sources of light were the torches that lined the walls, each one dimly lit and barely enough to drive out the shadows. There were no windows to let in the cheerful sunlight, and everything was damp and seemed to be dripping. It made Rae nervous; she hated the dark.
Pressing a little closer to Caitlyn unconsciously, she looked around and gulped. "Is...is this where one of our classes is?" she whispered. She wasn't sure exactly why she was whispering, but something about the darkness in the area made her feel rather like she was a naughty student sneaking out after dark, in which case the whispering would have been appropriate. Plus, sound seemed to be amplified and echoing in the dark stone corridors. It was all a bit foreboding.

"Is...is this where one of our classes is?"
Caitlyn didn't respond immediately, instead trekking to the Potions classroom. One more left turn, straight a while, turn left again, and there they were. Caitlyn motioned to the door.
"Welcome to Potions." She turned a glance to Gemma, who was looking quite frightened at being down here. Caitlyn rolled her eyes. Sure, it was a little dark and dreary, and perhaps slightly damp, but there was nothing blatantly scary about it. Not during the daytime, at least. Even Caitlyn had to admit that she'd been a little hesitant to wander the halls the previous night. It didn't matter that there was no proof of what time of day it was in the dungeons; it was simply all to do with perception. And when one was tired and knew that there was no light outside, one tended to be rather reluctant to traipse along dark and damp corridors.
And if Gemma thought this was scary, then she didn't have much place in Gryffindor, did she? Weren't Gryffindors known for their often idiotic acts of bravery? A dungeon shouldn't make them quake in their boots. How pathetic.
Feeling as if she'd won, Caitlyn turned back around.
"Ready to scurry back to your common room?"

Freya had just left her common room attempting to find her way out of the dungeons. She was fuming. She had written to her mother yet again asking her to let her come home. Not only had her mother said no, but sent a four page letter lecturing her about how the dark arts are evil and she should be grateful, bla, bla, bla. She wanted to perpare a nice mild hex to send to her far from helpful mother. She liked the potions teacher fine enough, so she headed in the direction of his classroom. As she walked, she began to think of excuses of why she needed a good hex.
She was glaring at the floor, and walking a little faster than normal. She turned into the potions classroom, not looking where she was going and collided with a body in front of her. She stopped and looked up in shock to see a girl with hair that looked like it belonged on a highlighter. She knew it was not this girl's fault, but she couldn't help releasing some of her anger on her. She pushed past bumping her shoulder hard into the other girl's. She stopped, turned around and put as much venon as she could into those words.
"Watch where you are going, tispe."

"Welcome to Potions," Caitlyn said, stopping at a door that lead to a room filled with benches, tables and shelves full of potion ingredients. Ah, so that's why they'd had to come to these creepy dungeons. Potions was down there. She was at least happy that she didn't have to come in here at night; it'd be terrifying then, and Rae had always hated dark, dank, cramped spaces. And the dungeons corridors definitely fit those descriptions.
"Ready to scurry back to your common room?"
Rae felt her resolve harden at Caitlyn's somewhat mocking words; she was afraid of the dark, yes, but there was a perfectly reasonable...okay, maybe not so reasonable. How many kids had to tell people that they'd been locked in dark closets for long periods of time and left in nothing but perfect silence, where the only sounds were their own voices which echoed through the place in a most terrifying way? Certainly not many. And she didn't really like making excuses anyways. "Of course not. Why would I? I don't like creepy dungeons, but I still have to find my way around."
Rae knew she wasn't the bravest creature in the world, honestly. She'd been puzzled about the Hat's placement of her in Gryffindor. But Aunt Rosie had told her that bravery wasn't about not being scared; it was about being scared and still doing what had to be done, and finding classes definitely fit into the 'had to be done' category.
"What's next?" Rae said, and then turned resolutely down the hall in what she hoped was a direction out of the creepy, dank dungeon; she could do this. She would find her way to whatever classes they needed to find. Unfortunately, she ended up plowing right into someone else and toppling to the ground on her bum.
"Watch where you are going, tispe."
Rae couldn't do much but stare up in shock at the other girl. "That's so mean!" she said, feeling tears sting her eyes and leaking a little into her voice. She hadn't even done anything!

"Of course not. Why would I? I don't like creepy dungeons, but I still have to find my way around."
Caitlyn raised an eyebrow. It was Gemma's funeral. If she wanted to parade around in the Slytherins' lair, it would be her head on the stake. Of course, that meant that Caitlyn still hadn't quite gotten rid of her... sighing, she conceded that she might have to simply put up with the minor annoyance for the time being. Better not to make enemies when you were looking for a way out.
"What's next?" Caitlyn opened her mouth to respond, but Gemma was already on her way marching down the corridor. Caitlyn wasn't sure exactly where they were, but she knew that was definitely not the right direction.
Caitlyn looked in the other direction. She wondered if she could just head that way and leave Gemma behind. But that was awfully cruel, and regardless of how brave she tried to be, Gemma was obviously quite a bit scared. Why was it that Caitlyn cared again? She wasn't sure if she did. Still, she'd prefer not to have that on her conscience. She was the one who had led Gemma into the dungeons, anyway. The least she could do was deposit her semi-safely upstairs before abandoning her.
When Caitlyn turned back to follow Gemma, she was sitting on the ground. Another girl, a Slytherin upperclassmen from the looks of it, was standing over her. Had Caitlyn missed a collision?
"Watch where you are going, tispe."
Caitlyn glared at the newcomer. Something didn't seem right. Who bumped into someone and ended up on the ground themselves? And besides, Caitlyn knew Gemma had been watching where she was walking. She wasn't going to just smack into someone for the sake of it.
"That's so mean!" Oh Merlin, was Gemma going to cry?
Caitlyn stepped up, crossing her arms and glaring darkly up at the other girl.
"Do you have a problem? Or are you too pathetic to pick on people your own level?"

"That's so mean!"
Was she seriously about to cry? Freya did feel a little bad, but if this girl was gonna be a wimp about it then it wasn't her fault.
"Do you have a problem? Or are you too pathetic to pick on people your own level?"
She hadn't even noticed the other girl come around the corner. Freya calmly walked over to her to stand about two inches from her face. She spoke to her n a very quiet but firm voice,
"Listen here you little pathetic first year. You are not even close to my level. Så tilbake av. So, unless you want to get hurt, I suggest that you take your little, cry-baby friend and how do you say, shove off?"

The rude girl who had shoved her was now facing off with Caitlyn, their faces not two inches apart. Rae glanced between the two of them; she hadn't meant to start some kind of a fight by being there. Of course, she hadn't chosen to be shoved, but if she hadn't made Caitlyn drag her around the castle, she wouldn't have been there in the first place and then there wouldn't be a problem.
"Listen here you little pathetic first year. You are not even close to my level. Så tilbake av. So, unless you want to get hurt, I suggest that you take your little, cry-baby friend and how do you say, shove off?"
Rae stood to her feet angrily. "I'm not a cry-baby!" A small amount of her raw magical strength swept through the corridor, but she pushed it back; she wasn't that angry about being called a cry-baby. It was just, this big mean girl was trying to be mean to Caitlyn and it was all her fault for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. "And you...you're just a big jerk! A really big one! And you should go pick on people your own age, which is ancient! You look like a hag!"

"Listen here you little pathetic first year. You are not even close to my level. Så tilbake av. So, unless you want to get hurt, I suggest that you take your little, cry-baby friend and how do you say, shove off?"
Caitlyn nearly growled. She may have been a first year, but she likely knew more already than this girl would ever learn. The other Slytherin knew nothing of what she was capable of. And one thing Caitlyn did not take kindly to was being treated like a child. She was no longer the innocent little girl she should have been at eleven, and she would not put up with anyone pretending otherwise. Her Housemate had not watched her mother die. She had not watched her father rot away into the shell of the man he once was. She had never spent the night at an abandoned playground to escape her life.
Gemma yelled something, but Caitlyn wasn't listening; all her attention was on the girl who had been stupid enough to talk down to her. Her blood was practically boiling. Something swept over them, something raw and uncontrolled. Caitlyn didn't ponder on it too long; feeling it only made her want to put her power to good use. Already, the area they were standing was growing colder.
"And you...you're just a big jerk! A really big one! And you should go pick on people your own age, which is ancient! You look like a hag!"
That did cut through to Caitlyn's mind, and she smirked. Gemma really was horrible at everything, wasn't she? A Gryffindor to the end. Without looking away, she took a step back.
"Do not think for an instant you are above me," she said to the Slytherin, her voice deadly calm despite the rage inherent in every rigid muscle throughout her body. "You do not know the meaning of being hurt. However, I would be much obliged to show you." Without taking her eyes off of Freya's or even moving an inch away, she drew her wand. "Now I suggest you leave before you have to learn the hard way not to mess with me."

"And you...you're just a big jerk! A really big one! And you should go pick on people your own age, which is ancient! You look like a hag!"
Freya heard the girl she had ran into stand and begin throwing suckish insults at her. She turned to see miss bubblegum head yelling. She gave her a look that plainly said "are you serious?", then turned back around.
"Do not think for an instant you are above me. You do not know the meaning of being hurt. However, I would be much obliged to show you. Now I suggest you leave before you have to learn the hard way not to mess with me."
Freya took out her wand once she saw that the other girl did first. She didn't point it at her, just merely held it at her side. As the other girl stepped back, Freya took a step forward.
"If I were you, I would be extremely cautious of whom I speak that way to. I am older than you and can therefore make your life her a living hell. Now go back to you common room little one, you might poke someone's eye out with that little stick of yours. Adjø, hore."
Freya took another step forward and lightly pushed her back a foot. The, she turned to the other girl, and shook her head in a "you're an idiot" fashion, then began to walk down the corrador.

Now go back to you common room little one, you might poke someone's eye out with that little stick of yours. Adjø, hore." The older Slytherin pushed Caitlyn and then shook her head at Rae in a dismissive fashion before starting back down the corridor.
"What's that supposed to even mean?" Rae said, not understanding the last couple of words the other girl had said. The red-head felt the chill in the room and crossed her arms for warmth; She was getting increasingly nervous about how cold it was getting, and she could sense that the cold aura was coming from Caitlyn. The other girl could blow up at any moment. What's more, the other Slytherin was completely dismissive of Cait, and though Rae didn't know her well, she could tell that it was a very dumb thing to do from the way she'd spoken moments ago.
Rae didn't care that this other Slytherin seemed to think that she was nothing more than an idiot; it was mostly true. But Caitlyn seemed to mind very much that she was being treated like an inferior child.
Tentatively, Rae reached out to touch Caitlyn's arm. "Let's just go; she's not worth getting in trouble, and we still have to find our classes."
Rae knew that Caitlyn didn't think of her as a friend; far from it. But Rae couldn't help but feel responsible for this, and she wanted to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

Oh, it was on. It was so on. She was going to make this stupid, foreign, arrogant excuse for an upperclassman pay. She wasn't going to stand there and take insults.
The girl started to walk away, but Caitlyn quickly moved and pressed the tip of her wand against the retreating back, pressing it just above the collar of the other girl's robes. The sensation it caused was likely very similar to the experience shared by anyone who had ever attempted licking a flagpole in the dead of winter. Some people got hot when angered; Caitlyn turned frigid.
"Who ever said I wasn't aiming to poke your eye out?" she said lowly. The place steadily grew colder. Caitlyn was not in the mood for self-control. Any second now she was going to lash out and actually cause someone lasting damage, whether it be to herself, the girl in front of her, or Gemma.
A sudden touch, almost too warm to bear, graced her arm, and Caitlyn had to physically fight not to fling a hex at it. "Let's just go; she's not worth getting in trouble, and we still have to find our classes." Right. Gemma. They were finding their classes, weren't they?
Still glaring, Caitlyn lowered her wand and simultaneously shied away from Gemma's hand. She cast a vague, unconcerned look to the mark she'd left. It was small and pink; although it would likely be uncomfortable for a while, it wouldn't cause any lasting harm. Still, it served the girl right.
"You're right. She's no snake; just a pathetic excuse for a worm." She turned opposite from her opponent and stalked off without another word. Gemma could follow or not. Either way, Caitlyn needed to leave quickly. She couldn't get expelled before classes had started.

"Who ever said I wasn't aiming to poke your eye out?"
The hallway had suddenly grown very cold, and Freya stopped in her tracks. She felt the tip of a wand push against the back of her neck. She froze. The tip of the wand was freezing, it was so cold that it began to burn her skin. She didn't move. She would not giver her the satisfaction of causing pain. Just when it was becoming almost unbearable, the other girl stepped in.
"Let's just go; she's not worth getting in trouble, and we still have to find our classes."
Thankfully, the wand left her neck, she knew it must have left a mark. But, the two girls turned to wlk down the hall.
"You're right. She's no snake; just a pathetic excuse for a worm."
"A worm am I?"
Freya fired a curse at the two girls walking away, but unfortunately missed. Her curse hit the wall next to the girl with the pink hair. She raised her wand to fire again.
"Jeg er ikke en orm. Ikke du tør noensinne fornærme meg igjen til gode - ikke noe skank. Du hadde bedre lærer din sted før du får vondt. Som gjelder for deg to liten savner bubblegum hodet. Du er både idioter, du fortjener hverandre. Nå, gå bort før jeg hex du igjen, og denne gangen jeg vil ikke savne."

Rae screamed when the curse hit the wall next to her, reaching up to cover her ears and dodging away from the wall, nearly topping sideways onto the ground once again, but she didn't. The wall crumbled next to her head, and, with wide eyes, Rae turned to look between the now even more seething Cait and the other girl, who began screaming something at them in her native language.
"Jeg er ikke en orm. Ikke du tør noensinne fornærme meg igjen til gode - ikke noe skank. Du hadde bedre lærer din sted før du får vondt. Som gjelder for deg to liten savner bubblegum hodet. Du er både idioter, du fortjener hverandre. Nå, gå bort før jeg hex du igjen, og denne gangen jeg vil ikke savne."
"Reality check! Nobody understands you!" Rae all but screamed for lack of knowing what else to say in her somewhat panicked state, her hands still near her head, as if having them there would help her to protect herself. Her heart was thudding painfully in her chest from fear, and she was beginning to feel a little light headed as the corridors filled with the cold aura from Caitlyn and her own magic struggled within her, trying to bust out and eliminate the threat, but Rae wouldn't let it; Rosie had told her that she controlled the magic, not the other way around.
But it was taking a lot more will-power than she'd thought it would when tested with real danger, and the more Caitlyn's own power filled the room, the more hers wanted out to join it. She felt anxious and on edge, and hated her magic. It was evil, and tainted, and it scared her. She had worked hard to contain it. And this girl was attacking and Caitlyn was getting mad and she didn't know how much longer she could keep the peace; she didn't think she could hold it off any more than she could stop a giant flood with her own small body.

Caitlyn spun on her heel the moment she felt the curse go flying. Luckily, it seemed both she and Gemma were untouched, but they might not be so fortunate the next time.
"Jeg er ikke en orm. Ikke du tør noensinne fornærme meg igjen til gode - ikke noe skank. Du hadde bedre lærer din sted før du får vondt. Som gjelder for deg to liten savner bubblegum hodet. Du er både idioter, du fortjener hverandre. Nå, gå bort før jeg hex du igjen, og denne gangen jeg vil ikke savne."
Caitlyn was far from fluent in Norwegian, but she heard a couple English words, and she did not like them a bit. Particularly skank. If anyone was a skank, it was the idiot flinging curses around and shouting in other languages for no apparent reason. She was the one who had started the whole spat; no one else held the blame there.
Caitlyn raised her wand again, not bothering with control. The other girl brought this on herself. Around them, the torches flickered and died out, and a wind that shouldn't exist below ground picked up. This useless display of power would probably leave her weak, but Caitlyn wasn't much for thinking logically in her state of mind.
"How about this?" she growled, "You never even think about touching a hair on her little red head, and you walk out mostly unscathed. You come near either of us again, and I show you what suffering means." And Caitlyn meant every dark word.
People like Gemma, they were why she needed to be a Healer. The people who tried to hurt them, the innocent and guiltless, deserved to rot. No matter how stupid and annoying Gemma was, she had done nothing that merited a curse.
